United Airlines Veterans Scholarship Application Process

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be an honorably discharged veteran with aircraft maintenance
  • The applicant must be a student enrolled in a FAA-certificated Part 147 School;
  • The applicant must have successfully completed the first term of the school’s
    program; and
  • The FAA-certificated Part 147 School attended by the applicant must be a 2019
    member of the Northrop Rice Foundation OR the applicant must be a 2019
    Northrop Rice Foundation Student Member.


An application package must include:

A complete application consists of five (5) or more parts as described
below. All of the parts of the application must be submitted in one (1)
PDF file with the name of the student in the file title.

  1. A completed application form checking each award and scholarship being sought
    … the form is available at Veterans Application Form.
  2. Evidence of honorable discharge (Form DD214);
  3. A minimum of two (2) recommendation letters … one written by an aviation
    maintenance professional such as an instructor, aircraft maintenance technician, or
    aviation maintenance manager, and one written by a professional who is not
    associated with the applicant’s school, such as an employer, ex-employer, or
    professional well-acquainted with the applicant’s professional demeanor.
    Optional additional letters written by persons that will provide amplifying
    information into the applicants need, professionalism, or career intentions are
    always welcome.
  4. A transcript from the applicant’s school showing all work completed by the
    applicant; and
  5. An essay written by the applicant.
    • The essay is a very important part of the application package. This is the
      vehicle that allows you to let the Northrop Rice Foundation Board of
      Directors know who you are, why you are seeking a scholarship, and what
      your goals are in the aviation maintenance technician world.
    • The essay shall include a minimum of five (5) paragraphs structured as

      • An introductory paragraph summarizing the applicant’s general
        aviation goals and need for financial assistance.
      • A paragraph describing the applicant’s desired future involvement in
      • A paragraph specifically describing how each of the awards and/or
        scholarships being sought is needed by, and will benefit, the
      • A paragraph describing how the applicant is involved at school,
        employment, and within the community in extracurricular activities
        such as supporting school, civic or charitable initiatives.
      • A closing paragraph containing any other information the applicant
        would like considered as NRF reviews applications and makes
      • (Optional) Additional paragraphs can be added to the letter prior to
        the closing paragraph if desired.

Application Process

  • Application packages must include all the items defined above in the
    “Applications” section. Application packages with missing items will not be
  • Applications must be submitted as one complete PDF file attached to an email
    message. Be sure to include all application items in the single PDF attachment.
  • The electronically submitted e-mail subject line and the PDF attachment shall
    contain the applicant’s name. Examples:

    • E-mail subject: T. Jones NRF Application Package
    • PDF attachment: T. Jones Application Package
  • The email with single attached file is to be sent directly from the applicant’s
    personal or school e-mail address to awards@northropricefoundation.org .
  • Applications on file January 31, 2019 will be consider for the available
    scholarships and awards.

Award Notifications and Ceremony

The students selected for the scholarships and awards will be announced at the Awards
Luncheon held during the Aviation Technician Education Council’s (ATEC) 2019
Annual Conference. The scholarship and award winner will be notified by e-mail in early
March 2019.
